⚠️ Important Notice to the Public
Recent laboratory testing of water from Newlands Spring has shown that while the water appears clear, odourless, and free from harmful bacteria at the time of testing, it is not suitable for unrestricted drinking without treatment.
What Was Found?
✅ No E. coli or coliform bacteria detected
This means no fecal contamination was found at the time of sampling.
⚠️ Very high sulfate levels detected
Sulfate concentrations were measured at 800 mg/L, which is double the recommended safe limit for drinking water.
⚠️ Low natural protection against future contamination
The water has a low oxidation level, meaning it has no natural ability to suppress bacteria if contamination occurs.
What Does This Mean for You?
Drinking this water may cause:
Diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Dehydration
These effects are more likely in:
Children
Elderly individuals
Visitors not used to high-sulfate water
Although the water may taste acceptable, taste alone does not indicate safety.
Public Advice
🚫 Do not use this water as a primary drinking source without treatment.
✅ The water may be suitable for non-drinking purposes (e.g. washing) if no symptoms occur.
⚠️ Pregnant women, infants, and people with sensitive digestive systems should avoid consumption entirely.
