As August comes to an end, we celebrate the end of Women’s Month with an updated water report for Newlands Spring. Newlands Spring Water has been touted as a natural, refreshing beverage, sourced directly from the heart of the Newlands. While recent testing conducted by The Chemistry Solutions Company has confirmed the water’s exceptional quality in many respects, one mineral, sulphate, has raised some concerns.

Sulphate levels in the water were measured at a concentration of 1000 mg/L. While this value is significantly higher than the recommended maximum contaminant level (MCL) set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and many national regulatory bodies, it’s important to note that sulphate is generally not considered a major health risk. However, it’s unlikely that consuming Newlands Spring Water would cause significant health problems due to sulfate. The primary health concern associated with sulphates in drinking water is often the potential for metal contamination. Sulphates can increase the solubility of metals like lead and copper, which can leach into drinking water from old pipes or plumbing fixtures. This can be particularly problematic in areas with aging infrastructure.

While the high sulphate levels may concern some individuals, especially those with sensitive digestive systems, it’s important to weigh the potential benefits of consuming Newlands Spring Water against the risks. If you have specific health concerns or are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before consuming the water.

In industrial applications, high sulphate levels can cause corrosion of equipment and machinery. In recreational settings, such as swimming pools and hot tubs, excessive sulphates can lead to skin irritation and eye discomfort.

Newlands Spring Water remains a viable option for those seeking a refreshing, natural beverage. While the elevated sulphate levels may be a consideration, the overall quality of the water, as assessed by The Chemistry Solutions Company, suggests that it is safe for most people to consume in moderation.
