The short version
Cape Town’s municipal water supply is treated and regularly monitored against the SANS 241:2015 national drinking water standard, and for most of the city, most of the time, tap water leaving the treatment works meets that standard. That’s the baseline fact worth starting from.
So why do people still worry?
Three real, non-hypothetical reasons:
- Ageing infrastructure. Water that’s safe leaving the treatment plant can pick up contaminants — lead, iron, sediment, bacterial regrowth — from old pipes, especially in older buildings or properties with ageing internal plumbing.
